How to get an NTN number in Pakistan

An NTN (National Tax Number) is your registration with the FBR. For most individuals it’s your CNIC number, and registering is free on the FBR’s own Iris portal. Here’s the process, and when it’s worth having someone do it for you.

The steps (individuals)

  1. Go to the FBR Iris portal and choose “Registration for Unregistered Person”.
  2. Enter your details — CNIC, a working mobile registered in your name, and an email. You’ll get verification codes.
  3. Complete the form — personal, contact and, if you have one, business/income details.
  4. Submit. Your registration is created; for individuals the NTN is generally your CNIC number.
  5. Log in to Iris any time to file your return and check your status.

Registration itself is free. Beware anyone asking for a large “NTN fee” — you’re paying only for help, not for the number.

When to get help

If you have business income, multiple income sources, or just want it done correctly the first time, a tax professional can register you, file your return and get you onto the Active Taxpayer List (ATL). For a simple salaried individual, the Iris portal is usually enough on your own.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fee to get an NTN?

No — registering on the FBR Iris portal is free. Any charge is only for professional help with the process, not for the number itself.

What is my NTN number?

For most individuals, the NTN is your CNIC number. Businesses get a separate registration.

Can someone do it for me?

Yes. Verified tax professionals on Qamru can handle NTN registration, return filing and getting you on the ATL — tell Qamru what you need and compare offers.
