How to file your tax return in Pakistan
Filing your income tax return in Pakistan is done on the FBR’s Iris portal, and getting it in before the deadline puts you on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) — which lowers the tax withheld on many everyday transactions. Here’s the process at a glance.
The steps
- Register first if you haven’t — you need an NTN (for individuals, usually your CNIC) and an Iris login.
- Gather your figures — salary certificate, bank profit, any other income, and tax already deducted (withholding).
- Open the return in Iris for the tax year and fill the income, deductions and tax-paid sections.
- File the Wealth Statement too (assets and liabilities) — individuals are required to submit it with the return.
- Submit before the deadline to appear on the ATL. Keep the acknowledgement.
Do it yourself, or get help
A straightforward salaried return is manageable on Iris once your documents are in order. If you have business income, multiple sources, rental income or you’re unsure about the Wealth Statement, a tax professional will file it correctly and make sure you land on the ATL.
